Thermostat Guide

Non-Programmable, Programmable & Smart Thermostats Explained

Not every home needs the same thermostat. Here's how the three main types actually differ, and why the right choice matters even more once a heat pump or high-efficiency system is involved.

Non-Programmable Thermostats

How it works. This is the basic dial or manual model. You set one temperature and it holds there until someone changes it.

Why people still use them. Nothing to program, nothing to sync to an app, almost nothing to go wrong. The trade-off is you don't get any of the energy savings that come from a schedule, someone has to remember to adjust it by hand every time the house is empty or everyone's asleep.

Programmable Thermostats

How it works. These let you build a schedule around your actual day: lower the heat at night, ease off while you're at work, whatever fits.

The catch. They cost more than a basic model but a lot less than a smart one, and the savings only show up if someone actually sets up the schedule. We see plenty that were never programmed past the factory default.

Smart Thermostats

How it works. A smart thermostat adds WiFi, an app, and in a lot of cases a learning algorithm that adjusts on its own. You can control it from your phone, get alerts if something's off, and some models work with room sensors to even out hot and cold spots.

What to watch for. They cost more upfront, and older homes sometimes don't have the extra low-voltage wire (called a C-wire) that most smart thermostats need to stay powered. On multi-stage or heat pump systems, not every smart thermostat is built to run that equipment correctly, so compatibility matters more than the marketing on the box.

High-Efficiency Equipment and Heat Pumps Need the Right Thermostat

Why it matters. A variable-speed furnace or a heat pump doesn't just run on or off, it ramps up and down and talks back and forth with the thermostat constantly. A generic thermostat that isn't built for that kind of communication will still work, but the equipment often can't run at the efficiency it was designed for, and on some systems it'll throw fault codes or short cycle.

Our recommendation. We usually suggest sticking with the thermostat the manufacturer built for that specific piece of equipment, especially on heat pumps. It costs a little more up front but it's what lets the system actually deliver the efficiency you paid for.

Thermostat Brands We Install

Honeywell. The one we install the most since they make everything from a basic dial to a full smart thermostat, and parts and support are easy to find.

Nest and Ecobee. These cover most of the smart thermostat requests we get, and Ecobee in particular tends to handle heat pump setups better than most because of how its room sensors and staging work.

Manufacturer-specific options. For high-efficiency furnaces and heat pumps from Carrier, Trane, or Lennox, we'll often recommend that manufacturer's own communicating thermostat instead of a third-party one. That said, if you already own a thermostat you like or want a specific brand, we'll install it. It's your house.

Common Repairs

Common Thermostat Problems We Fix

Most thermostat calls come down to one of three things.

Dead or Low Batteries

What we check first. A thermostat with a blank screen, one that's stopped responding, or one that keeps resetting itself is often just low on battery power, especially on battery-only models. It fixes more calls than you'd think.

Faulty Thermostat or Sensor Problems

What causes it. Dust builds up inside a thermostat over the years and can throw off its temperature reading, and the internal components wear out with age just like anything else electronic.

How to tell. If your thermostat reads several degrees off from the rest of the house or the screen doesn't respond to touch anymore, the unit itself is usually the problem, not your HVAC equipment.

Incorrect Installation or Wiring After Equipment Changes

The wiring side. A thermostat has to be wired to match the equipment it's controlling. On a heat pump, the Y wire calls the compressor and the O or B wire switches the reversing valve between heating and cooling, and a missing common wire (C-wire) can cause a smart thermostat to lose power or reset randomly.

When we see this most. If a heat pump or a new high-efficiency system was installed and the old thermostat was left in place, it often hasn't been reprogrammed or rewired to match, which is one of the most common reasons a new system doesn't perform the way it should. We check the wiring and settings against the actual equipment, not just what the thermostat says it's doing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Thermostats FAQ

How do I know if my thermostat needs to be replaced?

If your thermostat is unresponsive, gives inaccurate readings, or struggles to communicate with your HVAC system, it may be time for a replacement.

Can you install smart thermostats?

Yes. We install and configure smart thermostats that let you control your home's comfort from your phone or tablet.

Do I need a special thermostat for my heat pump?

In most cases, yes. Heat pumps and other high-efficiency equipment often run better with a thermostat built or approved by the same manufacturer. A generic thermostat will usually still work, but it may not run the equipment at full efficiency.

Why did my thermostat stop working after a new system was installed?

This usually means the old thermostat wasn't rewired or reprogrammed to match the new equipment. Heat pumps in particular use different wiring than a standard furnace or AC, so the thermostat has to be set up specifically for it.

What types of thermostats do you service?

We work with all types: digital, programmable, WiFi-enabled, and traditional thermostats.

How long does thermostat installation take?

Most installations take less than an hour, including setup and testing.

Will a new thermostat help lower my energy bills?

Absolutely. Modern thermostats are designed for efficiency, helping you avoid wasted energy and better manage heating and cooling costs.
